Why not take the opportunity of a Starbucks paper cup to spend a thought on friendship. A first look at the topic reveals cultural differences on what is referred to as friendship as opposed to less intimate associations. However, following the listing on Wikipedia, valuable friendships seem to be based on some key elements exercised on a consistent basis: The desire of what is best for the other, sympathy and empathy, honesty (especially when it may be difficult for others to speak the truth, e.g. in terms of pointing out faults), mutual understanding and compassion (comprising the ability to go to each other for emotional support), enjoyment of each other’s company, trust, positive reciprocity — a relationship that is based on equal give and take, and the ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings and make mistakes without fear of judgement. That is a lot to think about – especially in light of observed loss of quality and quantity of close friendships and a suggested link between fewer friendships and psychological regression.
